genioplasty

the process begins with a detailed consultation and evaluation of your facial structure, profile, and aesthetic goals. advanced imaging and measurements are used to determine the ideal chin position and size that will best complement your existing features and bring your face into balance. this step ensures a customized and natural-looking result.

genioplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. the surgeon usually makes an incision inside the lower lip (intraoral approach) to access the chin bone, which avoids external scarring. in some cases, a small incision under the chin may be used.

for a sliding genioplasty, the surgeon carefully cuts a small horseshoe-shaped piece of bone from the lower edge of the chin (mandible). this segment of bone is then moved forward, backward, or sideways, as determined in the planning phase, to achieve the desired contour and projection.

the repositioned bone segment is secured in its new position using small, medical-grade titanium plates and screws. this provides stable, long-lasting support. the soft tissues are then carefully draped over the repositioned bone, and the incision is closed with dissolvable sutures.

in some cases, particularly for increasing projection in a recessed chin, a silicone or other biocompatible implant may be placed over the existing chin bone instead of performing a bone cut (mentoplasty). the surgical approach remains similar, but the technique of augmenting the bone is different.
